Marketing & Sales – The use of Intrigue in Selling

In one of my marketing articles, I recall giving an example around the messaging for a toothpaste brand so instead of saying Eunice’s toothpaste gives a fresher breath. I could actually say that Eunice’s toothpaste takes care of halitosis if my objective is to intrigue, my customers.

And when I say intrigue, I mean, trying to spark off their curiosity or interest in what I am selling either product or service.

So I share here, the use of Intrigue in making sales. Strolling down the sales streets, it is glaring that similar products are sold by all hence the need for differentiation is key in standing out

The fact is we all have so much in our faces and right now, your customer is spoilt for choices. It is no longer news that online connections have increased in the last couple of months. So here are a few tricks to arouse your customer’s interest in what you have to offer and once their interest is piqued, there is more probability that sales will be made

  1. Create suspense– Please don’t tell us everything you have to offer. You need to keep your customers salivating and longing for more. So if I do lots of e-book sales as an example, I will just give out a tip of the iceberg either in an executive summary/podcast or a Prologue which will then drive traffic to my YouTube channel where you can pay for and download the whole book. So I will pick and stress the most interesting part of my book that addresses your need to create the needed suspense. This same tactic has been leveraged by movie producers and so they put out the movie trailers to lure you to buy the movie. Another perfect example is to throw up a fact. I could say do you know that in a recent study, 61% of buyers are spending more time sourcing and purchasing personalized gifts, I am very sure you may want to hear more of this interesting trend. I am sure that all you CEOs out there who are into personalized giftings will contact me to get more information.
  2. Make Your customers aware of their need- It may surprise you to know that a couple of us are not even aware that we have a need until it is pointed out to us. Do you know that you can be making a profit and yet you are not productive? , even before the era of working remotely, SMEs, corporates, business owners have struggled with productivity, we don’t seem to understand what it is or how it affects our business, so I will show you how and why productivity is actually the most important of all as it cuts across what you do. You see what I have done, I have pointed out that need to you which I have a solution for.
  3. Call out a specific challenge- something you know your customers are struggling with—and this only works when you know their pain points. Hence deep insights about your customers will help you come up with solutions. Do not ever forget that your customers will always buy solutions and not products. A perfect example is the sales of car seat vibrators with the deep-seated knowledge of a day in the life of my customer which throws up the fact that my customers drive themselves through traffic every day, I may come from the angle of, Let us take care of those long hours resulting in backaches for you, Our Car vibrators will massage your back and waist as you are driving through long hours in traffic. So with this, I have been able to relate the challenge being faced by my customer and linked it to the product for sale.
  4. Personalize the message: Everybody loves recognition and acknowledgment, Play this up. It works in email marketing very well, It helps you connect with your customers and your prospects. When you try connecting with them on a personal scale and perhaps in their spaces, it shoots up the chances astronomically of your making sales. If for an instance, I know you dot over your kids a lot, I may want to consider starting the conversation with you by asking after them individually like calling out their names. I trust Steve is keeping up with his new school, it will be heartwarming for your customer to know that you don’t just want to sell but care about them as well.
  5. Lastly, teaser and reveal marketing works. So, conceal your message in exciting and fun interactive experiences and then reveal the product or service. This is a great tool used in advertising in the corporate world and can be adapted for SMEs and entrepreneurs as well
